Old Homestead Steakhouse: A Classic NYC Experience

On a recent quest to find a traditional steakhouse, we found ourselves at Old Homestead Steakhouse, located at 56 9th Ave in the heart of Chelsea. Dubbed one of the oldest steakhouses in New York City, we were intrigued to see if it lived up to its reputation.

The decor is straightforward, allowing the focus to remain on the dining experience rather than flashy aesthetics. While the restaurant was not overly busy during our visit, it maintained a warm and inviting atmosphere.

While they looked beautiful on the plate, the oysters had an unexpected crunch that seemed more like sand than seasoning. It was a surprising element that left us scratching our heads.

However, the Porterhouse steak was a different story. While many pieces were enjoyable, too many had excessive fat, making it less than ideal. It certainly didn't stand out as the best steak we've had.

The service was good throughout our meal, with attentive staff who were eager to assist. However, we found it a bit odd to be presented with a request to review the restaurant on Google at the end of our dinner. It felt a bit tacky for a steakhouse of this caliber to solicit reviews so directly. We understand the importance of online feedback, but it seemed to overshadow the dining experience a bit.

In summary, Old Homestead Steakhouse delivers on some fronts with its comfortable ambiance and decent service. While we enjoyed the Gladiator steak, other menu items left us wanting more. If you're in the Chelsea area and looking for a classic steakhouse experience, it’s worth a visit—but perhaps temper your expectations about the meat quality.
